Abstract Author: Jakob Wendén Title: ”You don't want to bring anything up if there isn't anything” - A study in how pre-school personnel are reasoning about their mandatory reporting duty and suspicions about child maltreatment. Supervisor: Tove Harnett Assessor: Hans-Edvard Roos The purpose of this study was to examine how pre-school personnel are reasoning about situations where they suspect any form of maltreatment towards a child. In addition to this, the aim with this study also was to discuss how the pre-school personnel's reasoning influence their acts in these situations. A qualitative method was used in this study, which is based on interviews with five pre-school personnel in a smaller municipality in southern Sweden. To analyse the material, a social constructivist approach as presented by Berger & Luckmann was used. As a complement, Nils Christie's concept of the ideal victim and the ideal perpetrator was also used. The findings include that a majority of the respondents found it emotionally hard to report cases to the social services. One reason for this can be the close relationship the personnel experience with the children's families and parents. Other factors that might influence the tendency to report suspicions of maltreatment might be the anonymous relationship with the social service, a lack of knowledge about how to file a report and how to identify signs of maltreatment among children
